             Professor K.Pazhanivel , A native of sunderasapuram near Kumbakonam . In the midst of a healthy and intellectual upbringing, he obtained his B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from the College of Engineering Guindy, Anna University in 1999 and started his career from 1999 as a Lecturer in Thiruvalluvar College of Engineeirng and Technology, Vandavasi, Thiruvannamalai District , to satisfy his passion for teaching and research. Subsequently, he obtained his M.Tech., in Engineering Mechanics from Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) in 2005. Besides having a strong technical expertise and analytical skills, now he pursuing his Ph.D., degree from Anna University, Chennai.

 

          He has contributed to the areas of Engineering Graphics , Engineering Mechanics, Strength of material, Principle of Management, Composite material with his 10 publications in renowned research journals, 10 research publications in International Conferences, 15 research publications in National Conferences, more than 25 technical reports and seven technical books some of which he has co-authored. He visited USA, China, Kong- Hong, Singapore, Thailand, etc.  for last three years.

Currently, Professor K.Pazhanivel is the Heading the department of Mechanical Engineeirng of Thiruvalluvar College of Engineering and Technology which is affiliated with internationally leading and highly advanced technical University - Anna University, Chennai and he is known for his virtues as a wise mentor, friendly teacher, innovative administrator with leadership quality.

 

          Mechanical Engineers require a regid understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, energy and manufacturing. They use this concept in the design and analysis of automobiles, heating and cooling systems, buildings and bridges, Manufacturing and process industry equipment & machinery, aircraft and many more.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

 

Major events & achievements

 

          The department conducts national and international conferences to share their knowledge obtained through research with other researchers in India and abroad. The International Conference on "Futeristic trends in Mechanical Engineering" (ICFTME 2012, 2013 & 2014) attracted active participation of 140 delegates from highly reputed universities in  different countries each year.

 

           The department also conducts many student level National Technical Symposia (Mecafest) to enhance the students' technical skills and to update their knowledge in modern developments in engineering and technology. A hands-on design contest is the highlight of these symposia. The Mechanical Engineering Association is a forum for students to develop their professional skills. Students are also encouraged to take part in awareness campaigns that have social relevance..

 

 

Academics

 

Undergraduate

 

                The B.E in Mechanical Engineering is a widespread degree program. The aspiration of the mechanical engineering curriculum is to create a flexible undergraduate educational experience in design, mathematics, modeling, computing, management, engineering science, humanities, social sciences and fine arts. Core study topics include fluid mechanics, thermodynamics & heat transfer, solid mechanics, materials engineering, manufacturing, energy systems, dynamics & control Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) and others. This extensive and flexible program allows students to customize their programs to meet their objectives and particular career goals. Traditional students can prepare for technological careers in industry, graduate school or management. The more interdisciplinary students can utilize this program as a beginning  for professional careers in business or public service.

 

 

Postgraduate

 

 

              Graduate study programs in CAD/CAM,Thermal are available in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. These programs prepare students for design positions that require skillful and creative solutions to solve engineering problems in their specializations. Students in all these programs are provided with good computational knowledge and exposed to mechanical engineering software. All these programs are interdisciplinary.

 

             The department of Mechanical engineering is a premier Department  of TCET. With well qualified faculty and devoted technical staff, the Department  has proved itself consistently- the finesse, confidence and comprehend  attitude of its graduating students speak for themselves. The school’s success is primarily attributed to its dedicated faculty who take up emerging challenges and deliver competently. It would not be an exaggeration to suggest that, overall, Mechanical department has delivered beyond the remit of its original expectations. Research activities at the department are progressing in the areas of feature based design, Material manufacturing/Fabrication, optimization/analysis of mechanical systems, alternate fuels for IC engines, air pollution modeling, thermal energy storage, circulating fluidized bed technology, sheet metal forming and materials technology. About 30 research papers have been published in various international and national conferences/journals in the last few years. Fifteen books from the department have also been published.

 

 

 

Industrial Connection

 

 

              The department has to its credit corporate training programs, industrial consultancy, and funded projects from government bodies. These connections served to benefit students in the form of good placements, well-equipped laboratories and industrial exposure. The participation of industries in curriculum designing has helped the department to keep pace with fast-changing industrial needs. The department also benefits from the visiting professor programs of AICTE through which highly experienced senior executives deliver lectures to staff and students.

 

 

Careers

 

 

                The program enables the students to take up careers in a broad spectrum of industries. Many of the IT industries also have CAD/CIM divisions, which increases the job potential of mechanical engineers. Around 70% of the students are placed in reputed industries practicing core and allied engineering, through campus recruitment and the remaining 30% prefer higher studies in India and abroad.

 

 

Cutting-edge laboratories & facilities

 

                The Department of Mechanical Engineering has over 17 laboratories including thermal engineering, heat-transfer, dynamics, metallurgy, metrology, fuels, etc. Modern computing facilities are available for students at the Computer Aided Design and Computer Integrated Manufacturing Laboratories.

 

                 The Computer Aided Design (CAD): Centre has leading edge CAD/CAM and CAE software and hardware facilities which include 100 IBM workstations with 21" monitors, Silicon Graphics (Fuel), A0 Plotter, Printers of various categories and high-end CAD softwares such as I-DEAS, ANSYS, Pro/Engineer, SolidWorks, 3DS Max, DFMA, Hypermesh, ALGOR, NISA, Mechanical Desktop, AutoCAD, Think3 design, DPM Assembly, DELMIA, etc. Besides training TCET Students, the CAD Centre is also used for consultancy / Project Work / training industry personnel.

 


The Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM): Centre has 39 IBM workstations with 17" monitors, printers of various categories, high-end CAM softwares such as Unigraphics, CATIA, I-DEAS, CIMATRON, EdgeCAM, CMAS, Virtual NC, Quest, IGRIP, Controllers like FANUC & VIKING etc, besides a Jobber XL CNC Production Lathe, DMC 63v CNC Machining Centre, Daewoo Horizontal Milling Machine, Kirloskar Viking Milling Machine, MTAB CNC Trainer Lathe, EMCO CNC
The Central Workshop: Workshop is equipped with Electronica EDM Wirecut, EDM Spark Erosion, Conventional Lathes, Batliboi Milling Machines, Shapers, Slotter, Planer, Eiffco Gear Hobber, Gear Shaper, Centreless Grinder, Praga Hydraulic Surface Grinder, Eiffco Radial Drilling Machine, Various wood working machines, Bosch Power Tools, L&T TIG & MIG welding sets, Arc welding Transformers & Rectifiers, Crucible Tilting furnace and Sheet Metal equipments. Measuring instruments such as Milling Tool Dynamometer, Lathe Tool Dynamometer, Tool Tip Temperature measuring Thermocouple, Digital Vernier, Gear Tooth Vernier, Vernier Height gauges and Micrometers.

The Dynamics Lab: is equipped with 20 High end IBM Workstations with 19" monitors, all necessary tools and equipment to conduct lab experiments including a SCARA Robot manipulator, FANUC manipulator, Lab View, Ultra GRIP Software, MSc.ADAMS  Software, KOSIM Software, etc.

Mechatronics Lab: are equipped with a Modular Automation Production System (MAPS), Electro-Pneumatic system, PLC Programming Unit, and Sensor Technology Unit besides various instruments for measuring quantities like Vibration, Vacuum pressure, Force, Torque, Speed,
The Metrology Lab: is equipped with precision and accurate measuring instruments like Profile Projector, Tool Makers Microscope, Mitutoya Surface Roughness Measuring instrument, Comparators.

The Metallurgy Lab: is equipped with powerful metallurgical microscopes, Electrical heating furnace with digital temperature controller, Water and oil cooling furnaces, tempering furnaces, Permeability meter, sand rammer, sieve shaker, and etching and polishing machines to study the micro and grain structure of metals, f8" Double disc variable speed polisher, Pneumatic mounting press (750 Watts), Carl Zeiss Metallurgical microscope-Axios Kop 40 MAT, Hydraulic Specimen mounting press, CL 15 - 203 Clemex Vision PE software, 100W Ex Evaluation LASER.

The Thermal Engineering Lab: has medium pressure, oil fired boiler for production of Steam and is connected to a steam turbine for doing lab experiments. Besides 4-stroke and 2-stroke I.C. Engines, it has a refrigeration tutor panel and fabricates all the water coolers and deep freezers needed for the college and hostels, and maintain all the air conditioners in the Institute.
